What (who) is label switching - definition

Label switching
Label switching is a technique of network relaying to overcome the problems perceived by traditional IP-table switching (also known as traditional layer 3 hop-by-hop routing). Here, the switching of network packets occurs at a lower level, namely the data link layer rather than the traditional network layer.
label switching
<networking> A routing technique that uses information from existing IP routing protocols to identify IP datagrams with labels and forwards them to a modified switch or router, which then uses the labels to switch the datagrams through the network. Label switching combines the best attributes of {data link layer} (layer two) switching (as in ATM and Frame Relay) with the best attributes of network layer (layer three) routing (as in IP). Prior to the formation of the MPLS Working Group in 1997, a number of vendors had announced and/or implemented proprietary label switching. (2007-10-17)

<networking> (LSP) The specific path through a network that a datagram follows, based on its MPLS labels. (1999-06-14)
Examples of use of label switching
1. Mehmood Rafique, Arab News MANAMA, 24 August 2007 — 2Connect, the Kingdom’s link to the next generation of telecommunications services, has announced it has expanded its global, multi– protocol label switching (MPLS) network.
2. Under the terms of the agreement with Sprint Nextel, BellSouth‘s IP (Internet Protocol) network across nine states in the southeast US will be linked to Sprint‘s existing network in other regions using MPLS technology, or multi–protocol label switching.
